- The "Raider" Group, commanded by Col. A. V. Grossetta, a native of Tucson Arizona, was the last group to be activated in the Ninth Air Force European Fighter Command during WWII. The 406th fighter group consisted of 3 squadrons, the 512th, 513th, and 514th. Guided by their motto, "SEEK-ATTACK-DESTROY", this highly decorated and proud organization was assigned to the ninth fighter command, XIXTH, XXIXTH Tactical Air Commands. This group is proud to have been the first supporting fighter group over "UTAH" beach on D-Day. The 406th was the only Ninth Air Force Fighter group that was given the exclusive assignment of defending the beleaguere, city if Bastogne during the "Battle of the Bulge". From December 23rd through December 27th, 1944, for five straight days the "Raider" group was attacking and repelling the enemy offensive along the entire front from dawn until dark earning their second U.S. Unit Citation.
