- A: I became interested in comics about 1973, when I was 8 years old. They weren't exactly collectibles, mostly just black market books without covers, but they were cheap. Back then, the books were sold just like any other magazine, and the retailers could get credit for returning the cover or top third of the books. Well, the local drug store would sell the coverless books in bundles of three for 20 cents. So, I would collect cartons of returnable bottles and cash them in to buy the books.
