- We work in the Arc of Appalachia region, a 90-mile crescent of land lying along the Appalachian Front, bordered on the east by the great Scioto River, and on the south by the Ohio River. The Arc, a rich and bio-diverse region where the foothills touch the western glaciated plains of southern Ohio, was once the sacred axis of power for the Adena and the Hopewell Native American cultures. Our first preserve region -- The Highlands -- was founded in 1995 along this Arc in the botanically-rich cave region of the Rocky Fork Gorge, including the 7 Caves Canyon region. This beautiful preserve region, filled with springs, caves, rare plants and stunning rock cliffs, is already 2,000 acres in size --and growing every year. In addition to the Highlands, other preserve regions have been established along the crescent of the Arc, totaling over 3,000 acres of protected land. The Arc of Appalachia Preserve System has been the result of a miraculous grass-roots effort...and is still growing.
