The Appointing Authority for Phase 1 Ethics Committees (AAPEC) was established to take on the appointing authority functions previously performed by the UK Ethics Committees Authority (UKECA) for the independent sector ethics committees under the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations 2004. The AAPEC became the appointing authority for the Independent (non-NHS) Ethics Committees (IEC) August 2007.
