History

AMD was incorporated in the year 1969 in Sunnyvale, California. In 1970, the company introduced its first proprietary device: the Am2501 logic counter. The company went public in the year 1972 and began its production in new AMD manufacturing facility. The company was listed in the New York stock exchange in the same year. In 1982, the company signed an agreement with IBM to serve as a second source to Intel for IBM microprocessors. In 1986, the company secured a huge order from ATI to supply 700 chips per week. AMD acquired Monolithic Memories, Inc. in 1987 and entered programmable logic business too. In the year 1994, AMD and Compaq Computer Corp. signed a long-term contract to power Compaq computers with Am486 microprocessors. AMD acquired NexGen, a microprocessor company in the year 1996. In 1997, the company introduced the AMD-K6® microprocessor helping to drive PC prices below $1,000 for the first time in history. In the year 2000, AMD was the first company to break 1GHz with AMD Athlon™ processor. In 2003, AMD and IBM signed a joint manufacturing technology development agreement for developing advanced technologies. In 2004, the company established its unit in China with Beijing as the center. In 2005, AMD introduces the world's highest performing processors for 1-8P x86 servers and workstations. AMD acquired ATI in the year 2006 to create a new, innovative processing powerhouse CrossFire™ multi-GPU gaming platforms. In 2007, AMD introduced ATI Radeon™ HD 2000 series graphics processors. This could deliver The Ultimate Visual Experience™ graphics for desktop and mobile platforms.
