I was born in a small Kansas town, grew up in Oklahoma City and San Diego, and then — due to circumstances beyond my control — moved back to a small Kansas town for high school and college.
In 1999 I got a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, so naturally I went right into the field of database management. I am presently working as a prospect researcher and report writer for a private liberal arts college in South Central Kansas.
My ultimate career goal is to become a full-time writer. Like many other aspiring authors, I am Working On a Novel. Paying work in the arts is hard to get, and writing is no exception. Since saying “I’m a writer” often has the same hidden meaning as the statement “I’m an actor” uttered by someone in LA — i.e. “I am a waiter with a lot of spare time on my hands” — I prefer to call myself an “aspiring author” until such time as I actually make a non-trivial sum on a writing project. To date, my greatest writing achievement is winning runner-up in a state-wide writing contest for a story called “The Regular” which I cowrote with my mother in college. A 7,000-word prose joke about faith and redemption — in the general form of “So a fallen angel walks into a bar…” — it impressed the judges enough to net me $25.
