- The Adirondack region includes the largest park in the United States comprised of public and private land. Within this park is the largest wilderness area in the Northeast, which contains the headwaters for 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, 2,800 glacial lakes, a half million acres of wetlands and the highest mountains in New York State. The region has also been widely settled for more than 200 years, so it has a fascinating human history and many distinct communities and landscapes. This unique combination of extraordinary natural resources, an engaging human history and remarkable regional settlements, all contribute to the region's ecological, sociological, economic, cultural, and political significance.
