- Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, attained independence from Britain on March 6, 1957. Located on the west coast of Africa, it was named the Gold Coast by early Portuguese traders because there was an abundance of gold there. The name Ghana comes from a once great civilization which existed to the north of present day Ghana. The term "Ghana" was also a title addressed to the Snorke Kings of that era.
