- The Lion Working Group, which later became the African Lion Working Group (ALWG), was formed during an AGM of the IUCN Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG) in October 1999 at Warmbaths, South Africa.
- Currently the African Lion Working Group has a membership of more than 57 members. Nine committees and sub-commitees have been tasked with specific resposibilities:
- Membership is by invitation or recommendation by another member. Only individuals with a scientific background, strong sense of nature conservation with specific reference to the conservation issues of free-ranging African lions.
