- Jamie grew up in Columbia, MD and Sonny in Bethesda, MD. Shortly after moving to the city we bought our first dog, a black lab we named Leal, pronounced "lay-AL" (Spanish for "Loyal"). Training and housebreaking her was a challenge since we lived in the city. Leal had to stay in a small condominium for hours. We would come home during lunch to walk her and in the evenings we took her to a park where she could run free, but this was not enough for a high energy retriever. It was wonderful to see Leal running free in the open space of the parks with other dogs. About this time we both came to the conclusion that city life was not for us and that moving to a new place with some land was our next step. Both of us grew up with plenty of space to run and play in, and with plenty of animals to run and play with, we wanted to recreate our childhood settings for our four legged "kids" (and our future two legged ones).
