Alpharetta Bargain Store Downtown Alpharetta Real Estate, Clothing and Fixtures.

Description

uck Burgess, the owner of the local Shell Station, was getting ready to close for the evening when a man who called himself "Cannonball" wanted to give Buck a check for enough gasoline to get him home. Buck was reluctant to take the check so Cannonball offered to pawn a cashmere coat. Not knowing anything about ladies fashions, and because it was near closing time, Buck took the check. When he told his wife, Helen, the story and asked her what a cashmere coat was, she pointed out, in no uncertain terms, the serious error he had made in not taking the coat..Buck said that if it had been a nylon tire he would have known its value.

Cannonball returned a few days later to verify that his check had cleared, and offered to sell Buck some ladies clothes to go in the army surplus store he operated where the "Bargain Store" sits today. After satisfying himself that Cannonball was legitimate, Buck bought a "load of clothes", piled them on a table in the surplus store, and called some of the local ladies to come have a look. Needless to say, they were delighted to find new, high quality fashions priced at less than half of what they would cost in a boutique. That load quickly sold and Buck called for more. Over the next few months Cannonball brought clothes and Buck sold them.

Buck quickly realized that he could make more money selling ladies clothes than he could selling gas and tires (There were 13 service stations in town.) so he leased out the station and started traveling about the southeast with Cannonball buying deals for the ladies.
