- Alston’s unspoilt beauty, with its cobbled streets, warm welcome and air of timelessness has led many visitors to return or even settle here. Recently the town became the ‘star’ in televisions adaptation of Oliver Twist, when many of the local people adorned period costume to become ‘extras’.
- Alston and the surrounding area have a fascinating history. It became prosperous in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a result of the lead mining industry (and to a lesser extent coal and silver mining too).
