- Alternative was founded in 1987 by Frances Gonyer. While working with the Visiting Nurses Association (VNA), Frances saw a void in the care plan of the newly discharged patient and absolutely no "alternative" for those unable to manage on their own just by virtue of the fact that they were frail and elderly.
- In establishing the first Alternative office in Venice, Florida, Frances has been able to, in the words of one hospital social worker, "successfully bridge the gap between hospital and home healthcare and also pick up where friend and family support systems leave off."
