- AFY is a private non-profit organization serving Boulder County since 1978. AFY began as a program of Boulder Youth Services and was called Alternatives For Youth Out Of School In 1982, two Hispanic youth were shot and killed by the police which created an adversarial polarization between the Hispanic and Anglo populations in Longmont, Colorado. El Comite, a Hispanic organization, asked for assistance and acted as the parent agency when staff made the transition to Longmont to work with the Hispanic/Anglo communities on a healing process. As a result, both sections of the community were very grateful for the support AFY's staff provided and they were also recognized by the city of Longmont.
