History
Amerisource Bergen or ABC is one of the leaders and pioneers in the pharmaceutical industry. It made its debut in August 2001 with the merger of AmeriSource Health Corporation with Bergen Brunswig Corporation. This marked the start of a new age in the history of drugs and pharmaceuticals together with other related business zones. The main aim was to increase the confidence of the shareholders. This was to be done by being involved in making the very best healthcare and pharmaceutical products, providing alpha services and meeting new challenges with an eye to innovation and costs. The story of AmeriSource begins around the late seventies when Tinkham Veale of Cleveland made an entry into the world of the drug wholesale market. He did so by pioneering the formation of the Health Service Group of Alco Standard Corporation. Bergen started by buying off the drug house of Alco Standard and then launching into a number of other acquisitions. Gradually in this way he made his existence established and presence felt in the kingdom of wholesale pharmaceutical business. By the first half of the eighties his company became one of the prime drug distributors in USA.
In 1995 Alco Health decided to go public as AmeriSource Health Corporation. This was the just the beginning. It began to take giant strides geographically. Simultaneously it diversified its interests to include services related to the world of medicine. Companies were purchased. These companies were not only ones dealing with distribution but also dabbled in inventory management technological advances.
Expansion: Amalgamations and Mergers
By the turn of the century Amerisource Health Corporation had an address in twenty-two distribution centres. Its circulating revenue was to the tune of about $14 billion. It came to rank the fourth amongst the giant distributors for pharmaceutical and allied products and solutions in USA.
Bergen Brunswick followed a similar pattern of amalgamations and mergers through acquisitions. Lucien Napoleon Brunswig was the founder of Brunswig Drug Company. This was in 1907 when he relocated and renamed a wholesale drug unit located in New Orleans to Los Angeles. In 1969 Brunswick merged with Bergen Drug Company, which was based in New Jersey. Emil Martini had founded the latter in 1947. Bergen joined hands to form the colossus that is Amerisource Bergen.
The final merger took place in the first year of the new century. Fifty-one distribution centers dotted the scene with an annual $40 billion operating revenue. Since then ABC or Amerisource Bergen, has fifty-one distribution points located in six new states – all being of strategic importance. The facilities are the latest and it is an ongoing move of closing and expanding in domestic and international circles. Generic and branded pharmaceuticals are distributed. The company also is in the packaging industry and continually trying to upgrade it. In recent months several acquisitions have been made. Two are in Canada dealing with distribution of drugs and one is based in UK dealing with packaging.
