- Mary Dryden and her friend Joan Hoffman founded the Amherst Girls Softball League in 1973, when Mary’s daughter Stephanie told her mom she wanted to play baseball. AGSL played its first season at the Academy St. school where Principal Tom Ahern cleared time for the girls to use the schools fields and allowed the league to use the schools chalk liners. 5 town of Amherst board members contributed money to purchase equipment. The Joe McCarthy little league donated some old bases to the girls.
