In 1967, Michael A. McNeilly and others founded Applied Materials Technology, Inc. The company opened its first office in Europe in the year 1971. The stocks of the company were publicly offered in 1972. In 1979, the company established Applied Materials Japan (AMJ). Following this, the company opened its branches in Beijing, People's Republic of China, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. The Singapore unit was named Applied Materials South East Asia (AMSEA). In 1990, the company got listed among Fortune 500 companies. Emerging as the world’s largest semiconductor equipment manufacturer in 1992, the company established volume manufacturing operations in Austin, Texas. As early as 1993, the revenue of the company exceeded $1billion. In the year 1997, the company acquired Opal Inc. and Orbot Instruments, Ltd. In the next year, Consilium, Inc. was also acquired. In 2000, the company also entered mask marketing with the purchase of Etec Systems, Inc. Following this, the company opened its offices in Malaysia and began trading its stock in Hong Kong. The company entered China in the year 2001 by establishing its office in Shangai. Applied Materials entered into service agreement with Brooks Automation, Phoenix Silicon and Praxair and also acquired TORREX and Metron Technology N.V. in the year 2004. In 2005, the company completed acquisition of technology from SCP Global Technology, Inc. and formed a strategic alliance with GE Commercial Finance, Global Electronics Solutions. In 2006, the company completed Formation of Sokudo Company in a Joint Venture with Dainippon Screen and also acquired Applied Films Corporation.
