- In 1990, I started with my Ph.D. on barnacle geese in Ny-Ålesund. Ik had already quite some experience studying waterfowl. As a student I worked on wigeon, brent geese and snow geese. As an alternative for my military service I studied greylag geese. In 1998 I visited Spitsbergen for the first time to help making a documentary about geese. In 1989 I helped with a survey of Nordenskioldkysten and went with the Wildfowl Trust on expedition to ring geese. During this expedition we visited Ny-Ålesund for the first time. This village appeared to be full of opportunities to study the barnacle geese. The birds were tame and moving in between the houses during night-hours (continuous sun during summer at this lattitude). These were unique conditions for behavioural observations. That is why I decided to start my research in this village.
