Arnold Clark Automobiles has risen from strength to strength over the past 50 years and is credited as Europe's largest independent car dealer. Named after its founder, the company has expanded considerably and has a nationwide presence with over 135 dealerships.
Sir Arnold Clark's success began over 50 years ago when, after leaving his position as a Motor Mechanics Instructor with the Royal Air Force, he utilised his experience and leadership qualities to establish his own company. He purchased a Morris Ten Four for £70 and after many careful hours restoring the car to its original condition, sold it for a profit. From this first venture, Sir Arnold began to buy and sell cars privately, resulting in the opening of the first Arnold Clark showroom in 1954 in Glasgow's Park Road. From these initial steps, Arnold Clark has developed into one of the UK's largest privately owned businesses, selling in excess of 200,000 vehicles per year and generating an annual turnover of around £1.5 billion. The success of Arnold Clark can be attributed to its visionary founder, who is still at the helm of the company today. In 2004 Sir Arnold Clark received the highest accolade of recognition – a knighthood for services to the Motor Industry and the Scottish Community.
