- Several hundred years before the European settlement, the Teviot Valley was used by the Maoris as a route between coastal Otago and the West Coast for greenstone collecting expeditions. Widespread evidence remains – campsites, ovens and moa remains – particularly in the Millers Flat and Moa Flat Districts. Joseph Tamblyn was said to the “father” of the modern orchard industry. In 1866 he purchased 2 Apricot trees, 2 Peach trees and a plum tree from a passing swagger, beginning a huge industry employing hundreds of people.
