Founded as a one-person site by Sue Williamson in August 1997, ArtThrob has since expanded to many times its original size.

ArtThrob has three-times been a finalist in the Arts & Culture Trust Awards. In 1999 ArtThrob was nominated for the United Nations prize for best cultural website.
