- Service to the broader cultural community lies at the heart of the Arts Council’s long history. The Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids grew out of community planning sessions in ’67, which identified the need for a calendar and communications tool as well as a United Arts Fund. In ’69, the need for a community celebration of the arts was identified, and the Arts Council launched the annual Festival of the Arts. In 1996, the Arts Council decreased its involvement as a United Arts Fund and increased the services it provided its members adding workshops, advocacy programs and different funding programs. After a long history together, in the spring of 2002 Festival and the Arts Council formally became separate entities. The separation of the two organizations has had a positive effect on Festival. The organization has now experienced two very successful summers.
