Ilizarov was born in the Soviet Union in 1921. Although of illiterate parents, and not beginning his formal education until he was 11 years old. But he advanced quickly through, and was graduated from medical school in the Soviet Union in 1943, near the end of World War II. After graduation, he was assigned to practice in Kurgan, a small town in western Siberia.
