edit Description
AstraGate began testing, and providing services privately in 1998. Their first servers were in Palo Alto, CA, while their headquarter was in Santa Clara, CA. The company was incorporated in January of 1999, and began providing public services in 1999, and advertising to the general public. The senior founder of the company was a Project Manager, and an Electrical Engineer circuit designer, who use to be a programmer prior to his career as an Electrical Engineer. He left a large well known microwave telecommunications company (number 1 microwave company in the USA, and the forth in the world) to found AstraGate, Inc. He gathered his friends who's backgrounds range from scientists, to IT professionals, to engineers, and directors, and VPs, and had them get involved with getting the company off the ground.
AstraGate began with Web Hosting services, and immediately added dialup services, and packages that combined those services together. Some of the marketing methods, and packages AstraGate provided were a first in the industry, which were eventually duplicated by many other ISPs or Internet related service providers. One of them has a symbol of a butterfly. This did not bother AstraGate, because AstraGate has always been able to provide better service and quality, and yet keep a lower price than the equivalent service provider. AstraGate was one of the earliest customers of Level 3 communications and choose them for their sound infrastructure. We recall when they only had five cabinets that were leased in the whole facility of California. AstraGate had privileges to make use of collocation space, cabinets, and bandwidth within at least 25 states that Level 3 provided, and so AstraGate began to offer collocation services for small customers. Having collocation gave AstraGate the ability to provide T1, T3/DS3, OC3, and any other needed Internet service. AstraGate expanded with SDSL and IDSL while steering clear of ADSL, because AstraGate's focus was businesses. In the year of 1999 AstraGate tried adding VOIP/IPLD/IP Long Distance, but the market was not ready, and so AstraGate got into VOIP in the year of 2000.
AstraGate, Inc. is still private company, and does not expect to become public anytime soon, and its focus is simply to make a profit and expand while making a profit. AstraGate has always been customer driven.
