The roots of Tamarack Publications (parent company of ATV Illustrated Magazine) go back to 1987, when Founder/Publisher Bob Davis purchased his first ATV, a Honda FourTrax 350 4x4, which was used primarily for helping to gather firewood on his family's 500 acres of woodlands. Up to then he was using an old beat-up pickup truck that often got bogged down or hung up in difficult terrain, and was a bit too wide for the decades-old logging roads anyway. Having never ridden an ATV before, Bob imagined that it would be slow and cumbersome, somewhat similar to a compact tractor with racks. Still, taking into account its short wheelbase, 4WD, narrower width and $3500 price tag, he saw it as an economical alternative to a full-size tractor.
It didn't take long to realize that while the ATV was indeed a real asset in gathering firewood, it was also a heck of a lot of fun to use for exploring the woods. He built up a few more riding trails on those 500 acres, but it soon occurred to him that a full day's worth of riding would be really cool. ATVs were a pretty new item in 1987 in that neck of the woods--northeastern Pennsylvania--and convincing nearby landowners to give him permission to ride on their land was a dicey proposition at best.
In an effort to find out where legal riding was available on Public Lands, Bob would wake up early each morning and, before heading to work, write letters to agencies responsible for state forests and to District Offices of the National Forest Service, inquiring about the number and types of trails that were able to be used by quads, and discovered that there were very few "designated" ATV trails. Nonetheless, family vacations for the next few years would consist of camping and ATV riding with his wife and two children. Sundays not spent with the family were usually reserved for riding with buddy Mike O'Day.
