Our farm is located on the south edge of Chatham, on the rich sandy loam soils of the Thames River Delta. It was purchased by my father in 1934. My grandfather farmed on the clay soils near Charing Cross and left two farms to me. Our land base has grown over the years and is now a bit over 1700 acres. My wife, Moira (she is from Scotland) and I came back to the farm in 1970.
We farmed conventionally for many years but in 1997 started a transition on part of our land to grow organic crops. We grow commodity crops including corn, soybeans and sugar beets. We also grow vegetable crops. We grow conventional tomatoes for the Heinz Company and all of the organic tomatoes for the Thomas Canning Company (Utopia Brand). We produce organic asparagus, organic peas for processing, and strawberries which are almost organic.
Feeding cattle has always been part of our business. We pasture cattle in the growing season and when winter comes we serve them a forage diet of stored hay and silage . We use the manure for crop fertilization and soil building and we have started turning it into compost, used to nourish our organic crops.
