In the spring of 1992, just after the National Institutes of Health endorsed the Roux-en-Y procedure, we opened our doors and started the program that would soon lead the nation in bariatric surgery.
We began with a single facility in Addison, Michigan. It was at that facility that we began to design and continuously improve our protocol for the Roux-en-Y surgery procedure and an entire program that goes beyond surgery to deliver long-term success. We understood early on that the procedure itself was only a tool - it needed to be surrounded by a complete multidisciplinary team of care before, during, and after.
