My childhood was influenced by the likes of Frank Shuster, Johnny Wayne and most importantly, Red Skelton. These guys were role models for me who taught me how to look on the lighter side of life with a clean, simple sense of humour. I owe them a lot. I miss them.
A few years ago, while I was driving, I heard on the radio that Ernie Coombes (Mr. Dressup) had passed away. Perhaps I was still a little fragile as it was only a few weeks after 911. In any event, I was completely overcome by emotion. I almost had to pull the car over...Why? It was a strange but memorable moment. All I could think about was this image of someone passing me a torch and me just standing there looking at it...deciding if I was going to accept it and do something with it. I still get teary eyed when I think about it...weird but cool.
I chose to take hold of that torch and share some of the gifts that have come my way. I've been fortunate to have learned a lot of lessons in my various roles as a farmer, mechanic, musician, camp councillor, waiter, Sunday school teacher, youth group leader and Big Brother. If I had to sum up what I've learned so far it would be "machines are interesting but Kids...they're Fascinating"
