The owner William J. Purvis, AKA Fear, founded Battle Vortex (BV) in 1996. The site started out as a links page for online games from the main personal site called "Temple of Fear". The domain name battlevortex.com, was purchased in 1998.

Battle Vortex focuses primarily on topics surrounding MMOG, or persistent world games. We do occasionally cover other related topics and other games when our primary sources are slow. BV covers news, rumors, audio interviews, and commentary from within the community, from developers, and from different sources around the Internet.

BV has been known to be heavily interested in what many MMOG companies call the "End Game" or Player vs. Player/Guild vs. Guild (PvP/GvG) combat. The struggle for power and resources against a real person (enemy) has always appealed to Fear more then notoriety and "phat lewt" in online games. Many of the folks that visit BV frequently, feel the same way.
