In 1978, the Bead Shop in London, England began the concept of open-display bead stores. Finding a strong demand for beads and growing enthusiasm for personal jewelry design, the company (JRM Beads, Ltd.) became a leading importer of beads from around the world. The increasing investment and expertise led an expansion into wholesaling and the company inspired the rapid growth of bead stores in many different countries.
In 1983, a sister company, Beadworks, began trading in the United States as a mail order supplier. This led to the opening of the first US store in 1987. Today the American organization has two company stores and four franchise stores. Both companies continue to sell through mail order and wholesale, supplying designers, stores and individual customers around the world. Both the American company and the UK company distribute beads through their internet stores, Beadworks America Online Shopping and Beadworks Europe Online Shopping
In 2002 a Master License for the development of the Japanese market was signed and Beadworks Japan Online Shopping opened its website for business in the summer of 2003.
