Since I have moved to Charlottesville VA, I have spent several nights at the Star Hill Brewery in town, and have been meaning to do a review of the brewery, however several nights ago while I was there I was drinking their Amber Ale and thought that maybe I would compare it to one of my favorite ambers, Rouge’s American Amber. This is meant to be a review before the real review of the brewery itself. Anyways luckily for me the Star Hill Brewery has begun to bottle their beer as well so I could pick a six pack up at the Kroger.
Rouge ofcourse is the heavy hitting west coast brewery from Oregon, they have nothing to prove they just make great and somtimes unique brews. Their American Amber ale is not an exception, it has a a nice bitter and smooth taste, very malty and a bit thick taste. This amber ale is drinkable, and not so heavy where I can only drink one before I have to grab something lighter.
Ok so now after I have poured the Amber Ale from Star Hill Brewery here in Charlottesville, and I am beggining to think that this is an unfair comparison. This amber ale is a much lighter brew, with less complexity and more in common with a lager then an ale. First off there just isn’t that intense hops taste or that thick malty taste that Rouge brings, it is more a light caramel and crisp sweet flavor. Perhaps this ale is more of a traditional “amber ale.” I will say I do like a beer that is drinkable but also flavorful and this beer has that going. In fact the last time I was at the brewery I drank several of these pints from the tap…I could drink this all night long.
