Description

he Berkeley Broadway Singers is a mixed level chorus specializing in Broadway show tunes along with jazz, Latin and other popular music. We are dedicated to providing a joyful and creative music experience for our members and audiences. By giving free concerts, we reach a large community, diverse in age, race and ethnicity. We strive for artistic excellence and encourage each singer's musical development.

he Berkeley Broadway Singers began in September 1998 as the East Bay Choral Workshop. Founded by singers from the Berkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra's 1998 summer Broadway program, the group wanted to continue singing Broadway music. The chorus was launched as a non-audition vocal workshop with Music Director Ellen Hoffman. By Fall 1999, the workshop became the Berkeley Broadway Singers, and small concerts for family and friends were held. During that same season, we began singing at Bread and Roses events and at convalescent homes in Berkeley and Oakland. In January 2000, BBS was incorporated as a nonprofit organization, and the following October received the 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.

BBS is the only mixed Bay Area community chorus that focuses primarily on music from Broadway shows. By April 2000, BBS grew to 75 singers and performed its first free public concert in Berkeley with over 500 people attending.
