Nestled at the base of El Toro hill, the quaint downtown area of the thriving bedroom community of Morgan Hill offers visitors a nice place to stroll and relax. Within several blocks on this section of Monterey Road, there are several restaurants (with at least two more to open soon), a coffee house, a bagel house, a couple art studios, and some great gift shops. At the southern end of the downtown area is the new Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center, with its numerous meeting rooms, outdoor stage, dancing water fountains for kids to play in, and the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, home of the South Valley Civic Theatre. On Saturday mornings, the Certified Farmers Market is held year-around in the train station parking lot. The downtown area also hosts many of Morgan Hill's largest community events, including the Friday Night Music Series, the Fourth of July Parade, the Taste of Morgan Hill festival, and the December Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony.
The city has been busy building new community amenities for its 34,000+ residents. On the other side of the freeway, the new Morgan Hill Aquatics Center was completed in 2004. A new Indoor Recreation Center adjacent to Community Park on Edmundson Avenue, is planned for opening in 2006. This 50,000 square foot facility, designed with both youth and seniors in mind, will include an indoor pool, locker rooms, fitness rooms, and many other amenities.
