The Brain Injury Association of Washington is determined that no one who has survived a brain injury or been affected by another person’s injury should have to face their condition alone. Our mission, which begins with prevention, is to provide support to survivors of brain injury and their families, education to those who are being effected by brain injury, including the general public, and advocacy, to give the many suffering from this silent epidemic a public voice. Our vision is a world where all preventable brain injuries are prevented, all unpreventable brain injuries are minimized, and all individuals who have experienced brain injury maximize their quality of life.
One out of ten people are affected by brain injury. You may have been injured yourself, or perhaps you know someone who has. Defined as physiological disruptions of brain function resulting from internal or external trauma, brain injuries most often result from motor vehicle crashes, violence, of falls. Some injuries are severe, causing death or coma, while others are milder, with symptoms that are harder to recognize. Survivors may suffer from headaches or dizziness, a decreased attention span, difficulty concentrating, or moodiness.
