The League of Illinois Bicyclists (LIB) - cycling advocacy and education - www.bikeLIB.org

Description edit

LIB Assists with Bicycle Commuting

The League of Illinois Bicyclists offers a new service to those considering bicycle commuting to work, to the train station, to school or those who just want to run errands around town on a bicycle. The league offers links to websites that provide advice on how to get started as a bicycle commuter and other helpful information. If you can't find answers to your questions at these sites, then email the league directly, and a reply will be sent to you directly.

Bicycle Trail Dollars Preserved!

In each of the last two years, the state was forced to return some of its federal transportation dollars. Instead of "sharing the pain" with proportional cuts across all categories, IDOT raided bike and trail funds in an overwhelming way. LIB led a coalition to advocate against another disproportionate raid in April. [More details] [News release] The campaign was successful, saving roughly $2.5 Million in trail dollars! Thanks to all who made calls or sent e-mails.

LIB On Schedule for Bike-related Driver's Ed Training!

Last November, LIB won an IDOT grant to produce and distribute a ready-made lesson to Illinois' high school driver's education programs. Coupled with generous donations from cyclists and bike clubs, we will be able to finish the project in 2006 and distribute the information to other outlets, too. A video and teacher's guide will focus on proper car-bike interactions, addressing cyclists' rights on the roads and how to avoid common mistakes. (See our grant application for more.) As of May 1, we are on schedule, with an early summer video shoot scheduled near Aurora. Narration will be provided by Indy car driver Tony Kanaan and former U.S. Postal Service rider Robbie Ventura. Cyclist and motorist volunteers needed for the video - if interested, contact dean@bikelib.org.
