- Malta is the first European Union jurisdiction to licence and regulate online gaming. The review and modernisation of the gaming laws in Malta began in 1998 with the Gaming Act 1998, and has continued with new Remote Gaming Regulations. The general trend has been to streamline legislation in order to adapt it to the needs of the gaming industry and, at the same time, to secure a credible and certain regulatory regime for responsible gaming, strengthening it to ensure protection of players and players' monies. These moves have further reinforced Malta's reputation as a serious and credible European jurisdiction, attracting many reputable operators to Malta.
