- I [C. Diane (Kingsley) Powell] was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. My family included three sisters and two brothers. My father retired after working for over 43 years for Boeing Aircraft Company. At the time of his death in 1986 he was involved with over 1200 World Bible School students in Africa. He also enjoyed serving as Boy Scout music merit badge counselor and composing letters to the editor of our local newspaper regarding various issues. My mother was very active caring for all of us and passing on necessary skills and values. In order to communicate with my older deaf sister my parents and I took lessons in SIGN language. This led to an early and growing appreciation for the problems of language and communication.
