This site was originally designed by Charles Geitner. Tragically he passed away in 2002. In his own words this is what he went through.
I have Alcoholic/Bipolar and classed as ultra rapid cycling Bipolar I. My life has been up and downs. When I was 14 yrs old, I was diagnosed with Manic Depressive Illness, now known as Bipolar Disorder. At that time I had already became a heavy drinker and I was using drugs on a regular basis.
The alcohol and drugs kept my bipolar in check, and it did not bother me. I thought I had it licked. It wasn't long before I found that I was also an addict as well as Bipolar, and the drugs and alcohol just stabilized my moods long enough for me to get along in the world at half capacity. When I was 28 yrs old...yes it took me that long, I decided finally to stop the alcohol and drugs, and found my Bipolar was worse than I ever knew.
