Title edit

Birchbark Newfoundlands - Newfoundland Breeder - Gouldsboro, Maine

Description edit

"The Newfoundland dog entered our lives in the summer of 1970; life has never been the same, or without, a Newfoundland. We produced our first litter in 1973 (ShipshapeXNewfield), with excellent health and longevity. One male, Rajean, lived until he was 17 years old. One could write a book about his life: siring pups until age 13, being stolen in Yorktown, Virginia, and saving a life at sea. We raised our four children, John, Andrew, Natalie, and Ingrid while we raised our Newfoundlands. We also participated in limited showing, water work, and rescue. Now that the children are grown and gone, we are more actively involved in breeding and showing. The grandchildren, David, Ashley, and Lily are now being introduced to the magic of the Newfoundland.

After 28 years in the small fishing village of South Addison, where our Newfs all developed a love of swimming in the Atlantic, we have moved to Gouldsboro, Maine, near Bar Harbor. We now live on 100 acres of land, with woods, and a pristine stream which empties into the ocean. It is simply perfect for us and the dogs. Fred, a lobster fisherman for most of his life, now works at the Gouldsboro Medical clinic. Amy is still a 5th grade teacher. We have made several additions to our "family", with a quarterhorse mare, named Willow (Pretty Affair is her registered name), and 2 lovable, beautiful Clumber Spaniels. Bacchanal Norumbega's Nutmeg, is a spirited, happy girl who thrilled us with her win at the Clumber National Specialty in the American Bred Class. Smitty, Summerstraw's Arrowsmith, is from Judy Sutfin. He is a very young male, with Clumber lines back to England. They both fit in beautifully with our family, and we are excited about showing, and hunting with the Clumbers.

We also have an old Saint Bernard, Ivan, who is simply a love. We occassionally have puppies to qualified families. We screen our dogs for genetic diseases, and strive to produce the lovely temperament which is the hallmark of the breed.
