Description

Sifu David Schenk

David Schenk has been studying Chinese martial arts since 1972. Initially he learned Shaolin Long Fist as a student of Master Femon Ong. His major styles include Long Fist, Praying Mantis, Hsing I, Bagua, Mi Zhong, Piqua, and Tai Chi. He has also studied stretching, yoga, qigong, polarity, and nutrition. He was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 1988. At this time he is the owner of The Center for Body-Mind Harmony, where he teaches.

In the Spring of 1972, I began my martial arts training. I started with a system called Kwan Ying Do. Prior to this I was into exercise, running, weight lifting, and biking. I feel any exercise is better than no exercise. However, I also knew that something was missing; something felt incomplete. At first, the exercise I was doing, like most exercises, was a challenge. After a while though these exercises lose this challenge; add another pound, repetition, or mile. I knew I needed something else. When I took my first martial arts class and started training, it became very clear that most exercises have no depth, no balance, and no spirituality. Most exercises don't grow with you. The martial art becomes a way of being, feeling, and carrying yourself. It affects how you relate to others, not only when you are practicing but all the time. This way of being and feeling is not the way some teachers teach. To be the bully or the tough guy, that to me is not only superficial, but just plain immature. Well, to each their own. I believe that we will all grow and evolve when the time is right.

When you train, you don't really need a special place, or special shoes, you only really need yourself. In doing this, you learn a lot about just that, yourself. I believe everything in life is a reflection of where you are on a spiritual level, from the way you treat animals, to the way you exercise. This does not say that just because you do martial arts, you are better than others. Where you are and the way you think are reflected in your form. I do believe that proper teaching of and practice of martial arts can and will change people, physically, mentally and spiritually. The change to martial arts from other forms of exercise led to many other changes for me.
