- Last night at the bar when the rumors of a military coup displacing the much maligned Thaksin regime came flying across SMS, a number of sentiments filled the air: hipsters were annoyed that the bar closed, Bangkok’s politically oriented people celebrated that Thaksin was gone, and the models were generally confused. The rest of us had the feeling that I can only compare to that which you experience before a blizzard: You know it’s ostensibly “bad”, but you can’t wait to see what your world looks visually transformed and well, so different. Bangkok was in need of this kind of political blizzard: gridlock between Democrats and the TRT (Thai Love Thai) party which Mr Thaksin represents has continued for almost a year, as both sides claim each other is defying “democracy”. In the face of these debates came a resoundingly un-democratic solution: tanks rolling into Bangkok last night, surrounding government house, and dissolving parliament.
