Bookmark Now contains 25 original essays written by authors who came of age professionally in the last decade. Raised by television, video games, and the internet, they still decided to become writers and readers, producers and consumers of literature at the most media-saturated time in history, a time when books have more competition from flashier distractions than ever before. How? Why? What does this say about the place of books in our hypermedia world? BOOKMARK NOW attempts to answer these questions. As book lovers, we are familiar with the gloom and doom attitude of these “Unreaderly Times.” But, there are still smart people everywhere who love books and are excited for the possibilities the future will bring for connecting books and readers. BOOKMARK NOW argues and celebrates that that future is already here.
How it happened: Thanksgiving 2002. I’m in New York to celebrate the holidays with my family and I’m having lunch with a college friend who is a newly-minted literary agent. Since young agents have to make deals to keep their jobs, she’s been going around to classmates from our old creative writing department and seeing if they have any book ideas. I mention this one, an anthology of essays by writers from an "unreaderly" generation, and she asks me to write up a book proposal. I google "How to Write a Book Proposal" and get to work. But before I can finish, my friend leaves the agent business. I press on and then ask her what to do with my orphaned proposal. She recommends I send it along to Jud Laghi, a young agent at International Creative Management. Jud likes the book, we like each other and agree to give it all a try. He sells Bookmark Now to Basic Books in October of 2003.
The Work: Just under 18 months of finding writers, creating essay topics together, editing, re-editing and writing the introduction (4 drafts). About 70 writers were approached in order to get the 25 essays that show up in the book.
