The presence of Hungarians in the area where Brasov lays nowadays, precedes the arrival of the Saxons, who came here at the beginning of the 13th century and are considered to be the founders of the town.
In those times towns were built on strategic points, and the bend of the Carpathians was the scene of many hostile collisions between different groups of people. So this means that forts had to be built here before the town could exist, so that settlers would be protected.
Records show that indeed there were people inhabiting this land, who were Hungarian. Bishop William in his letter written in 1213, talks about Hungarians dwelling in this area. The Saxons, at their arrival found a large Hungarian community. As the number of the Saxon population grew, by aggressive political and religious methods they tried to assimilate the Hungarian population, which although eventually decreased in numbers, did not disappear. This procedure was not unique in the history of this community.
