Washington, D.C. Smoke-free Workplaces - Campaign Home

Description

and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids are leading a grassroots campaign to protect Washington, D.C. residents and workers from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. The campaign is committed to passing a comprehensive smoke-free workplaces law, including bars and restaurants, in the District of Columbia, and is supported by more than 80 D.C. organizations.

Secondhand smoke is a health hazard. It is responsible for 35,000 to 40,000 deaths from heart disease every year. Even relatively low exposure significantly increases the risk. Secondhand smoke also causes emphysema, lung disease, cancer, and increases the number and severity of asthma attacks in asthmatics. Contrary to popular belief, nonsmoking sections with separate ventilation systems do not offer any protection from the 4,000 chemicals and more than 60 known or probable carcinogens in secondhand smoke. That is why passage of a comprehensive smoke-free workplaces law in the District is so important.

The campaign is going to work with the Council of the District of Columbia to get a law passed. We face vocal opposition, but with a lot of hard work and the support of the community, D.C. will be smoke-free. The campaign is working hard to educate the public and the Council of the District of Columbia about the effects of secondhand smoke and the need for a law. This is an important cause.
