The nuclear furnace of a star with its continuous creation of ever heavier elements through the fusion of lighter ones is the beginning of our story. When three helium nuclei are fused a carbon atom is formed. All the carbon in the universe started this way. Every atom of carbon in a diamond was born in a star. Diamonds, however, would be torn apart in the nuclear furnace of a star, they came into being later on.
