Ancient History
In 1980, Tom was working as a wholesale premium wine sales representative. He met wine shop / deli / home wine making supplies store manager, Maribeth. The two began conducting monthly wine and food pairing tastings at her shop. The tastings soon blossomed into demands for catering. The tastings often featured Tom's own pickled vegetables, preserves and sauces.
In 1984, their partnership grew into the duo's first restaurant, The Black Sheep Bistro in Orange County, California. Tom served as Chef while Maribeth (MB to friends) worked as Dining Room Manager. The award winning Bistro featured American Regional as well as International Cuisine. Tom prepared many savory and sweet sauces, condiments, pickled vegetables and fruit preserves to accompany the many different dishes offered on the menu. Their customers badgered the pair to sell the canned products to take home. A cottage industry was born within the Bistro!
Not-so-ancient history
Years passed; they sold the Bistro to good friends Rick and Diana Boufford, moved north to Lake Tahoe, and opened a second restaurant, The Black Sheep Café in Carson City, Nevada. Tom continued to prepare all kinds of pickled vegetable and fruit preserves. The pair sold the Café and moved back to Southern California.
