Title

Butterfield Bank (Bahamas) Limited, Nassau, The Bahamas

Description

Expert Solutions and a Personal Approach

In 1758, Nathaniel T. Butterfield founded a merchant trading firm in Bermuda. One hundred years later, it became The Bank of N. T. Butterfield & Son, the country’s first bank.

By the late 1800s, the institution was supporting a budding tourism industry by lending money to innkeepers, retailers and companies who were creating the island’s infrastructure. In 1904, with the equivalent of about US$120,000 in assets, the Bank was incorporated by an Act of Parliament.

Since then, Butterfield Bank has grown and evolved to become a leading domestic bank in Bermuda, and exceptionally well regarded as a specialist offshore financial services group. The Bank is regulated by the Bermuda Monetary Authority, which operates in accordance with Basel principles and maintains close contact with regulators in other jurisdictions where the Bank has offices.
