Overview

BorgWarner Inc. is a supplier of automotive parts based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, USA. BorgWarner is known for supplying engine and drive train technologies, specifically transmission and four wheel drive components for light vehicles. Founded officially in 1928, BorgWarner has grown to become a leading supplier of automotive parts to over 20 customers, including such names as Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Ford. BorgWarner currently employs over 17,400 people worldwide, and in 2006, brought in over 212 million in earnings.

History

Although BorgWarner was not formally founded until 1928, its roots can be traced back almost 50 years prior. In 1880, a company known as the Morse Equalizing Spring Company was founded, which would eventually merge with Warner Gear (founded 1901), Borg and Beck (founded 1904), Marvel-Schebler, and Mechanics Universal Joint to finally form BorgWarner in 1928.

BorgWarner's automatic transmission was created in 1950. The “Ford-o-Matic,” as it was dubbed, was a three speed transmission for passenger cars. Just two years later, BorgWarner introduced the Schwitzer turbocharger at that year's Indy 500. With these two milestones in place, BorgWarner and its subsidiary companies continued to grow while creating and producing new parts such as the T10 four speed high performance manual transmission in 1956 (which was used in the new Chevrolet Corvette), the Model 35 aluminum automatic transmission in 1961, the T4 five speed and the T5 five speed manual transmissions for cars and light trucks in 1980, and the MAJI-BAND brake band assembly in 1983.

Their success hit a bump in the road, however, in 1987, at which time BorgWarner ceased to exist for a short while due to an unfortunate series of complex transactions. They were reborn as BorgWarner Security Corporation, and a new subsidiary known as BorgWarner Automotive Inc., was created. In 1993, BorgWarner Automotive Inc., spun off from BorgWarner Security Corporation and became independent. BorgWarner Automotive Inc., is the BorgWarner automotive part supplier that still exists today.

Modern Day

Since the spin off of BorgWarner Automotive Inc., BorgWarner has only continued to grow and prosper with little hindrance to speak of. From 1993 to present day, BorgWarner has created many new automotive parts for various companies, including:

The Morse Gemini chain system (1994) The 44-05 Torque on Demand transfer case (1994) A one way clutch for Ford's 5R55 transmissions (1996) The 44-09 four wheel drive transfer case (1997) Carbon-impregnated friction materials (1997) Plastic Air induction modules (1998) Fuel Efficient DualTronic transmission technology (2001)

In 2002, BorgWarner formally organized itself into Engine and Drivetrain groups.
