Encyclopedia of Cajun Culture

Kara Tobin Bernard was born in New Orleans, but has resided for most of her life in Franklin and Lafayette, Louisiana. She earned a B.S. in Environmental Science from Louisiana State University, where she worked for the Institute for Recyclable Materials. Possessing of a wide variety of computer skills, Kara is president of Écu Media Design, and is responsible for the layout, programming, and sponsorship of the Encyclopedia of Cajun Culture. She also collects the raw data contained in the encyclopedia’s entries.

Shane K. Bernard, a Cajun from Lafayette, Louisiana, holds a Ph.D. in History from Texas A&M University, where he specialized in recent Cajun history. He also holds an M.A. in History from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, where he studied Cajun and Creole culture. Shane is author of The Cajuns: Americanization of a People (2003) and Swamp Pop: Cajun and Creole Rhythm and Blues (1996), and has contributed to Louisiana History, Louisiana Folklife, Southern Cultures, the Journal of Folklore Research, and the Dictionary of Louisiana Biography. He has been consulted about south Louisiana history and culture by such media sources as the CNN, NPR, the BBC, and the National Geographic Society. He serves as editor of the Encyclopedia of Cajun Culture.

Shane and Kara reside with their daughter Colette in New Iberia, Louisiana, a short distance from the banks of the celebrated Bayou Teche.
