Rural and mountainous, Calhoun County is slightly northwest of the geographic center of West Virginia. Quick access to metropolitan areas is limited. This accounts, in part, for the relatively low property prices.
Spruce knob is about four hours from Grantsville by car, and offers nature/scenic hiking trails, picnic areas, viewing tower, and wilderness camping during the summer months. The strong winds, frequent mists, and one-sided trees offer an eerie but enchanting atmosphere.
